Description

Reconstruction-Era Labor Contract with Freedmen. One partly-printed page, 17.5" x 13.5", Marion County, Texas, July 8, 1865. This contract is between Texan Sam Moseley and twenty-six freedmen and women (some were married couples), entered into only weeks after the end of the Civil War. Each has left their mark (an "X") beside their names as they agreed to "labor for Sam F. Moseley." The contract contains printed columns of information about each freedman and woman: age, sex, class of laborer, wages, remarks, and the names of witnesses to the contract. Under "Remarks," some are listed as blind, "crippled badly," "crooked leg," and more. Near the bottom of the contract, Sam Moseley has signed under the statement, "I hereby agree to furnish food, Clothing, medical attendance, houses & fuel to each & every one of the freedmen & women whose names are borne on this contract."

On the verso is printed, "Labor Contract with Freedmen," along with other information, including the handwriting in pencil reading, "Loaned by Mrs. S. W. Moseley [of] Jefferson [Marion County], Texas." The document is toned with some minor soiling. Some weakness and minor separations exist along the folds, resulting - in one instance - in the loss of a few letters of text.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
