Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren: A War-date Note Describing an Attempted Re-taking of Fort Sumter from the Confederates. Dahlgren was in charge of the all-important South Atlantic Blockading Squadron which helped to implement Winfield Scott's brilliant "Anaconda Strategy." On November 6, 1863, he writes to an unidentified party,

"I wish I had the time, my young friend, to write you, as you ask a short letter, but every moment is engrossed. Perhaps you might like to see what's before my eyes, - Sumter crumbling away before our cannon, which sound incessantly."

Alas, the Union assault was ultimately a failure, largely due to rival between the Army and Navy commanders. Although the bombardment had reduced the fort to rubble, Federal troops would not re-occupy the symbolic site until Sherman's army marched through South Carolina in February 1865.

But for very minor light toning, the note is in excellent condition and measures 5.25" x 8."
