President James Knox Polk and Secretary of State James Buchanan Sign a Document Amending the Convention of 1841 Between the United States and Peru James Knox Polk (1795-1849) Official Document Signed as President, 12 pages, folio, Washington, June 1, 1846. Countersigned by Secretary of the State and later President James Buchanan (1791-1868). In immaculate condition but for ink blot in lower left hand corner as shown.

President Polk amends the condition of the treaty, or convention, of 1841 between the United States and Peru. In that treaty the "...Peruvian Government, in order to make full satisfaction for various claims of citizen of the United States on account of seizures, captures, detention, sequestration, and confiscation of their vessel, or for their damage and destruction of them, of their cargoes, or other property, at sea, and in the ports and territories of Peru, by order of said government of Peru, by order of said government of Peru, or under its authority, has stipulated to pay the United States the sum of three hundred thousand dollars, which shall be distributed among the claimants, in the manner and according to the rules that shall be prescribed by the government of the United States..."

Peru was to pay the whole sum in 10 installments of $30,000 starting in 1844 but had not done so. Polk, with the "advise and consent" of the Senate as stated in this document, moved up the starting date of the claims payment to January 1, 1846.Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
