    Post-Civil War Autograph Letter Signed with News from San Antonio. Four pages, 5" x 8", San Antonio, October 8, 1865. The Union soldier, Jackson [Pale Stafford?], writes to his Michigan family concerning the possibilities of going home, a recent visit to the Alamo "wher Col. Crockett & Col. Bowie Was slautered," and camels that were purchased in 1855 by former War Secretary Jefferson Davis. Some tape remnants along edges. Accompanied by the yellow envelope stamped and postmarked to Elsie, Michigan.

    In part, "[Regarding the Alamo] A strong stone building with portholes for small arms the building is used for storin' corn the Walls are all cut full of Names of men that was killed also of visitors the Gov't Camels are here how they have been kept by a citizen Sixty miles north of here during the war they have increased to over Sixty from 50 in 1853 I believe was the time they were Purchased they are a sight to see."
