Description

Pope Sixtus V Letter Signed "Sixtus PP V". One page, 8.25" x 11"; "Palazzo di Montecavallo"; June 2, 1590. A letter to Monsignore Cesi regarding a request for the rights to an archaeological excavation at Viterles: "Our Treasurer and Receiver, Antonio Ottobello... has received a report on Castello di Cinitella, diocese of Viterles, and district, setting forth the treasures and other precious stones and things to be found if excavations are made... it is better that such things be of use to humanity than for ever buried, we are pleased, as by these presents... and ordain that you grant to the said Antonio free faculty and authority to excavate treasures... providing that he promises and undertakes to pay a fourth of all that is found, to our Apostolic Treasury..."

Born Felice Peretti (1521-1590), he was Pope from 1585 to 1590. Sixtus spent a large amount of money on the city of Rome, rebuilding numerous churches, beautifying streets, and erecting new buildings and monuments (often cannibalizing ancient sites for building materials). Sixtus left a huge surplus in the treasury by collecting new taxes, selling offices, making loans, and granting rights such as the one described in the letter offered here. He reorganized the pontifical administration and limited the College of Cardinals to seventy.

Condition: Gently toned with scattered foxing. Pencil annotations on verso from a previous collector. Includes a full handwritten translation, and a partial typed translation.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
