Description

Poets Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. and Henry W. Longfellow Autographed Letters Signed. Offered here are two autograph letters signed: 1. three pages, 4.5" x 7", Beverly Farms, Mass., June 17, 1889, signed by Holmes. Heavily stained with marginal tear; otherwise, very good; 2. three pages, 4.5" x 7", Cambridge, January 2, 1878, signed by Longfellow. Toning and folds, fine.

    More Information:

The Holmes letter is written to George Ed. Sears of Kingston, Ontario. In full: "I should be most pleased to receive a copy of The Gleaner, which would take an honored place on my shelves, for the sake of early memories. Evening by a Tailor was written by me for a college periodical (The Collegian) and has often been published. It is contained in all the editions of my collected poems. I suspect The Gleaner has it in book form for the first time."

The Longfellow letter, written to Mrs. Calkins, sends thanks for a gift and agrees to send an autograph to a mutual friend.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
