The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

Perhaps the Most Important Surviving Document Signed by the Clanton Clan. Clanton signatures are rare in any form, but we have never encountered anything like this historic June 12, 1874, document, a petition "To the Honorable Board of Supervisors of Pima County to establish a presink [sic] at Clantonville on the Gila River and apoint [sic] N. H. Clanton Justice of the Peace and A.M. Smith Constable." Signatures include family patriarch Newman H. ("Old Man") Clanton, as well as Issac (Ike) Clanton, John W. Clanton, P. H. Clanton, and Smith. Ike and the McLaurys were, of course, the principal antagonists of the Earps at the legendary O.K. Corral gunfight. "Old Man" Clanton was killed along with four others in a notorious ambush in Guadalupe Canyon in August of 1881. The reverse of the document notes, "Petition granted and Precinct Established" on June 20th, 1874.

For the serious collector of Tombstone material, this document must be ranked as one of the most important artifacts ever to come to market. It measures 7.5" x 9.625", and save for some very minor smudges is in excellent condition. Also included is a Harper's Weekly woodcut by Remington, thought to depict the Guadalupe Canyon ambush, and a September 12, 1874, issue of the Arizona Citizen in outstanding condition. On page two is an article touting the overtures of the land in the Gila Valley, and discusses at length the efforts of N. H. Clanton and his family to develop the area and establish Clantonville.
