Pearl Younger (AKA Pearl Starr): A Rare Signature of the Daughter of Cole Younger and "Bandit Queen" Belle Starr. While the two were never married, it is widely believed that they became involved during Younger's days as one of Quantrill's Raiders, and in September 1868 Belle gave birth to a daughter, Pearl. When Pearl was a young child, Belle married Sam Starr, and in later life her daughter would refer to herself as Pearl Starr, quite possibly to capitalize on her mother's notoriety. However, Belle always referred to her as Pearl Younger, and that is the way she signs to acknowledge receipt of compensation as a court witness in 1886. According to this record, Pearl was present for 17 days of the Court's proceedings, for which she received $33.50 in compensation.

While biographical details are sketchy, it is known that during this period Pearl took the witness stand when her mother was being tried for larceny, and this Fort Smith, Arkansas document doubtless related to that testimony. As an adult Pearl turned to prostitution, and eventually opened her own bordello in Fort Smith. A shrewd businesswoman, Pearl came to own a string of brothels and hotels before her death in 1925.

Our research turned up only a simple 1923 letter signed "Pearl," and no examples of Pearl Younger's autograph at auction. The document measures 15" x 20" when folded open, and is in excellent condition except for partial clean separation along one fold line.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
