Patrick Henry (1736-1799) statesman, Autograph Letter Signed "P. Henry" one page, 6.5" x 8" with integral address leaf in his hand, Richmond, [Virginia], November 14, 1786, to his son-in-law Spencer Roane, by Fanny, a slave girl. As he prepared to depart Richmond after declining his reelection as Governor of Virginia in favor of resuming his law practice in Pleasant Grove, he writes of "The unexpected appearance of your Waggon [sic] & Fannys setting off prevents her being clad as we could wish -- Indeed she followed the Waggon without our knowing it, being according to custom, with a Throng about us. Supposing Fanny may be usefull [sic] - to you she is now sent- with love to our dear Annie... P.S. My Wife is so busy packing up &c &c prevents her writing" "Annie" was Anne Henry Roane Henry (1767-1799), his daughter. A fine, warm example. Some soiling and a tear to lower right corner affecting no text, else Fine. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
