Lind, popularly called "The Swedish Nightingale," agreed to travel to the United States at the behest of P.T. Barnum in 1849. The famous showman convinced Lind to undertake a yearlong tour of the country under his management and promotion. After her arrival in late 1850, she performed in over 90 concerts and earned approximately $350,000 (around $11 million today), which she donated to various charities in Sweden and the US. Lind, uncomfortable with Barnum's management style, severed their contract after a few months, but the relationship remained amicable.
