DescriptionTheodor Herzl Autograph Letter Signed "Herzl". Two pages, 5.75" x 9", No place; May 4, 1900. Typed on "Die Welt" letterhead, which was the name of the Zionist weekly founded and edited by Herzl in 1879 in Vienna. The letter, addressed to an unidentified friend and written in German, concerns Dr. Herzl's intention to entrust York-Steiner with the organization of the Jewish Colonial Trust. It has been translated to read:
"If you don't have in prospect a secure advantage, a fixed employment or the like, return as soon as possible, because I interspersed something in London which make your employment in the Colonial Bank possible. Of course, you have to be absolutely free and not tell me at a later instant, that you have refused another job because of my offer. That I don't want under no circumstances. Only when you are free, as at that time of my departure, we will enter into details. Moreover, I obtained something, which can bring you into an agreeable job and can be useful for the common work, so that I can be favorable with a friend, without doing ‘Favoritism Politic'. Please cable immediately after receiving this letter."
Theodor Herzl was a Hungarian Jew held to be the "Father of Modern Political Zionism". The Jewish Colonial Trust, also known as the Jeudische Colonial Bank, was established in London in March 1899 and was the first Zionist bank in history. Herzl played a large role in the bank's creation, as he saw the need for a strong financial basis in order for Zionist economics and politics to be taken seriously. Unfortunately conflicts in the Balkans and WWI hindered the development of the Trust for a period, and the bank was reorganized in 1933. As of 1934, the Trust has been controlled by the Anglo-Palestine Bank.
