DescriptionSir Henry Clinton Autograph Letter Signed "H Clinton." Two pages with integral blank, 7.25" x 9", June 17, 1784. Addressed to Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney, Home Secretary of Great Britain, General Sir Henry Clinton gives a testimonial for one of his secretaries and recommends him for an appointment, in part: "Mr. Russell, who was with me in America as one of my Secretaries, having shown me a memorial which he proposes to lay before your Lordship, I do but Common Justice to his merit by declaring my . . . belief of the Contents, and Expressing a wish that I could have awarded his Services with a more permanent promotion; but as that was not in my power, and the unfortunate issue of the war has deprived Mr. Russell of the office he held, I beg leave to recommend him to your Lordship." Docketed on the integral blank.
Peter Russell (1723-1808) served as a captain in the British Army and assistant secretary to Gen. Sir Henry Clinton during the Revolutionary War. After the war, Russell returned to England and, in 1790, immigrated to Upper Canada where he immersed himself in politics.
