Description

Simón Bolivar Military Appointment Signed. Two partially-printed pages, 8.5" x 12.25", in Spanish, Bogotá, Columbia, 1829. The document reads: "Simon Bolivar Liberator president of the Republic, etc., etc., In reference to the merit and service of the . . . first aspirant Jose G. Salon I have come to promote him to... first of the third company of the battalion Hunters of the West. Therefore I order to the chief who is concerned the . . . possession of the related job of first lieutenant of company. To apply and make him obey the laws, honors, and privileges that he is entitled to; and that he is being authorized in the corresponding treasury offices, so he can receive his salary with the terms set by law. Given, signed by my hand, stamped with the seal of the State, and endorsed by the secretary of state of the office of the war, in the government palace, in Bogota twenty four of May . . . of independence." Docketed on the verso. Embossed seal attached at the left edge. Large area of waterstaining has faded Bolivar's signature lightly. Scattered spots of foxing and toning at the edges.

At the time, Bolivar was head of what was then known -- albeit briefly -- as Gran Colombia, consisting of present day Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela, and the northern portions of Peru and Brazil. Bolivar would declare himself dictator the next year and narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. After Venezuela and Ecuador seceded from the "union" in 1830, Bolivar resigned, disillusioned and in poor health.
