DescriptionSimon Bolivar Document Signed as "Supreme Chief of the Republic, Captain-General of the armies of Venezuela and New Granada." One partly-printed page of a bifolium, in Spanish, 5" x 8", July 13, 1817. The political and military leader boldly signs with paraph, authorizing the sale of two mules. The verso of the document lists fabrics and fineries purchased, possibly with the funds received for the sale of the mules. Age-toned with foxing and small pinholes in the left margin.
Two years later, Bolivar, who played a pivotal role in South America's independence from Spain, declared himself dictator of what was known as Gran Colombia, consisting of present day Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela, and the northern portions of Peru and Brazil. After he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt and Venezuela and Ecuador seceded from the "union" in 1830, Bolivar resigned, disillusioned and in poor health.
