Sigmund Freud Autograph Letter Signed "freud." One page, 5.5" x 3.5" (sight), in German, Bad Gastein [Austria], July 8, 1923. This short letter to Dr. Edward Hitschmann reads, in full and in translation: "Acknowledge with thanks receipt of Lagerlöff's "Märbacka," which will certainly be read here, and again I wish you a good summer with your wife & child." Five months before writing this letter, Freud first detected a cancerous growth in his mouth caused by years of heavy smoking. Matted with a photograph of Freud and a translation of the letter and framed to an overall size of 13.75" x 22.75".

Dr. Edward Hitschmann (1871-1957), an internist who worked briefly as the Freud family doctor, joined Freud's Wednesday Night Society in 1905 and became one of his first students. In 1911, he published Freud's Theories of Neurosis to bring psychoanalysis to the public. A Jew, he immigrated to the United States in 1938 to flee the persecution of the Nazis.

Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940) was a Swedish author and the first female to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature (1909). Her memoir, entitled Mårbacka (mentioned in the above letter), was published in 1922.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
