René Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec Document Signed as president of the Société Anatomique. One page in French, 15.75" x 10", Paris, August 26, 1807. As Société president, Laennec (1781-1826) signs this document accepting "Mr. Monet (francois)" as a member. The French physician, lecturer, and professor of medicine made many contributions to modern medicine, including the invention of the stethoscope in 1816. Laennec also helped form the Anatomical Society of Paris ("formeé le 12 Frimaire au 12" [equivalent to December 4, 1803, of the French Republican calendar]), one of the oldest medical scientific societies. Ornately decorated with a wreath and intertwined serpents, beautifully and boldly signed by Laennec, Delaroche as vice president, Sitet as secretary, and Savary as treasurer. Some uneven toning along the left and lower edges. Clear text and signatures.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
