Description

    Ramón Músquiz Three Autograph Letters Signed Written During the Mexican Civil War. Also known as the War of Reform, this political battle lasted from December 1857 to January 1861, during which time, Músquiz wrote the following letters. Letter 1: Four pages including integral address leaf, 4to, Monclova, October 26, 1858. Written on light blue paper. Músquiz writes to Jesús de la Garza, military commander at Santa Rosa, regarding free-franking for troop mail. Also discusses the equipment needs of soldiers, mentions damaged done by Indians, and regrets that he is unable to pursue them at the current time. Light age toning. Letter bears heavy creases at upper left; slight damage at fold of second leaf. Generally fine. Letter 2: Four pages including integral address leaf, 4to, Monclova, December 29, 1858. Written on light blue paper. Addressed to Jesús de la Garza, military commander at Santa Rosa. Contains a list of the company forming at Santa Rosa and discusses the campaign against the Indians, for which Músquiz recommends using "scientific information" to learn their whereabouts or track them. Lightly age toned. Slight dampstaining and weakening at folds; small area of paper loss at wax seal. Fine condition. Letter 3: Four pages including integral address leaf, 4to, Monclova, February 9, 1858. Written on light blue paper with gilt edging. Addressed to Jesús de la Garza, military commander at Santa Rosa, commenting on the interior campaign. "They have honored the frontier with their heroism and the government has ordered that funds be distributed between casualties and families." Light age toning; two small areas of paper loss do not affect text. In fine condition. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
