Ramón Músquiz Autograph Letter Signed Regarding Runaway Texas Slaves. 4pp. with integral blank, 4to, written blue paper with gilt edging, Monclova, March 11, 1859. Addressed to Jesús de la Garza, military commander at Santa Rosa. Incidents involving escaped slaves who found sanctuary in Mexico frequently led to clashes between the Texan slave owners and residents of the northern Mexican states. In early 1859, the civilian troops which Garza had organized for defense against warring Indians was also furnishing protection from lawless adventurers from Texas. In part: "As regards the aid in arms and ammunition which the Negroes solicit, if they can be facilitated, do it... but it seems we should not trust in these unfortunates too much because in case of combat they could lack spirit and cause damaging disorder... I have proposed to the government that it could be advantageous to disseminate these Negroes in the towns of the interior of the state... removing the likelihood and excuses of the filibusters to penetrate our country." Músquiz also discusses the "unpatriotic conduct of J. Maria Cadena, who, in the act of furtively avoiding duty along with over fifteen men, in circumstances in which even women would be able to confront the filibusters, have given themselves to be known as untrustworthy of the name of Mexicans. If there were a punishment for selfishness during general disturbances... charges would be brought." Interesting and important content! Letter is in very fine condition. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
