    Pope Pius XII (as Cardinal Pacelli) Typed Letter Signed "E. Card, Pacelli." One page, 5.5" x 8", from the Vatican, January 3, 1939, on official embossed stationery. Only two months before being chosen as pope of the Roman Catholic Church, the cardinal, serving as the Vatican Secretary of State, consoles Mrs. James McDonnell of New York over the death of Mrs. Macaulay Duchess Brady. The cardinal's signature is clearly written in black fountain pen. Smoothed folds. In part:

    "I had your kind letter and I share with you the deepest sorrow for the death of Her Excellency Mrs. Macaulay Duchess Brady. All her friends must feel consoled that her should is surely having the reward that she so particularly deserved through all her life for her great devotion to the Church and for her constant faith. May the Lord give her soul the happy eternal rest that I on the top of all our ideals."
