Composed in German, the lot is accompanied by an English translation. Some weeks later the partner of the fission, the rare gas krypton, was discovered by Mr. Strassman and me...On the basis of this discovery, Einstein wrote the letter to President Roosevelt which started the Manhattan District Atomic Bomb Project." Signed, "Otto Hahn."

Otto Hahn (1879-1968) was a German chemist and winner of the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of nuclear fission. He is considered the "father of nuclear chemistry" thanks to his expansive research in radiochemistry and radioactivity. In 1938 he discovered the fission of uranium jointly with Fritz Strassmann. Their discovery had far researching implications. It prompted Leo Szilard and Albert Einstein to write to President Franklin Roosevelt who responded with the eventual creation of the Manhattan Project.
