Description

News from Galveston - Marcos Flores Autograph Letter Signed, one page, 7.5" x 9.5", Galveston, Feb. 21, 1859, writing to his friend Felipe de la Garza, likely across the border in Mexico. He writes: "I send you news that in the state of Pencilbenia [Pennsylvania] there is a group of yankees gathering to steal the state of Sonora. The American government wants to buy the island of Cuba and Spain does not want to sell it, but there are filibusters have begun making speeches on the cause... the gas company has brought everything necessary to install gas on all the streets, they say you can see the lights for 3 miles. They have begun to run lines 4 feet beneath the ground..." Many families maintained in contact with relatives across the border, in Mexico; relaying news from the United States must have seemed fantastical. In near fine condition with a rough left margin where integral sheet has been detached. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
