Nelson Mandela signed South African flagNelson Mandela Signed South African Flag. Written in black ink on the uppermost white stripe of a 67" x 43.5" South African flag, Mandela has inscribed "To David / [signed] N Mandela / 6-11-99." Five months before signing this flag, on June 14, 1999, Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) stepped down as the first president of the Republic of South Africa and the nation's first black leader.
Following his 1962 arrest for his anti-apartheid activism, Mandela spent twenty-eight years in prison, finally seeing release in 1990. Four years later, he was elected to the country's presidency. After his retirement from politics, he continued his activism for such causes as education, rural development, and combating the HIV epidemic.
