DescriptionNapoleon Bonaparte Autograph Endorsement Signed "Napoleon" as first consul. One page, 8" x 12.25", in French, Paris, January 31, 1804. Just over one year before his crowning as Emperor of France by Pope Pius VII, Napoleon was serving as first consul in the French government, making him the most powerful man in France. In this capacity, he received a plea for financial assistance, dated January 11, from Citizen Rauch, a member of the Corps of Engineers building roads, bridges, etc. in part:
"The Citizen Rauch . . . is close to being expropriated of his limited fortune, according to a decree of the Council of State, originating from a tangible error. . . . The Citizen Rauch, is Citizen First Consul [Napoleon], the only breadwinner in his large family. I beg you, be willing to return the present statement to the Councillor of State Boulay, with the order to prepare a special report."
At the upper left corner, Napoleon has written: "Sent back to Citizen Boulay so that he lets me know his opinion on this matter." Smoothed folds. Spots of chipping at the left edge.
