Lord Charles Cornwallis Autograph Letter Signed "Cornwallis". One page, 7.25" x 7.75", "Mansfield Street", London; May 15, 1785. The letter is addressed to an unknown recipient, regarding documents he is sending for safekeeping. It reads in full: "My exchange is dated the 9th of June 1782. I enclose to you the packet which I received from Maj. Dansey, in which are returns & papers relating to clothing, & the mens accounts &c, which papers I think it better that you should keep. You may show them to Col. Yorke when he comes to town."

Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis, is best remembered as one of the leading British generals in the American Revolutionary War. His 1781 defeat by a combined American-French force at the Siege of Yorktown is generally considered the end of the war, as the bulk of British troops surrendered with Cornwallis. Following the defeat and subsequent blow to his reputation, Cornwallis returned to England. He was later appointed governor-general and commander in chief in India in 1789, where his service did much to restore his reputation, and he was awarded the title of Marquis in 1792.

Condition: Usual mail folds, with light soiling and toning at edges. The lower margin with the addressee appears to have been cleanly sliced and then reattached with paper reinforcement on verso (possibly from original letter). The left margin is hinged to a similarly sized sheet of paper. Faint mounting remnants visible on verso. Signature is very clear.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
