Description

King Louis XI, King of France, Document Signed "Louis." One page, 8.75" x 6", circa 1466, in French. The king of France from 1461 until 1483 signs this document in a large hand below five lines of text. Louis XI (1423-1483) was known as Louis "the Prudent" during his reign. He was also informally nicknamed l'universelle aragne (old French for "universal spider" or the "Spider King"). He was a member of the Valois Dynasty and one of the most successful kings of France in terms of uniting the country. His twenty-two-year reign was marked by political machinations-a spider's web of plot and intrigue which earned him his nickname. His scheming and love for intrigue made him many enemies, including his own father, his brother, and Charles the Bold, who was to be his greatest foe. Louis is known to have been shrewd and often vicious, but in curbing the power of the dukes, he re-established the power of the monarchy and ensured the survival of the French nation itself. For all his diabolical qualities, he used them to create tremendous good for his country. This document is foxed with minor stains, particularly around the corners. Mounting remnants exist along the top edge. Negligible penciled notations exist on the recto, while other minor penciled notations, as well as a former collector's stamp, exist on the verso.

Also included is an engraved portrait of Louis XI of France, published circa 1805 by J. Wilkes of London. Mounting remnants exist along the top edge. Unevenly toned with a previous collector's stamp on the verso.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
