Description

King Joseph I of Naples Manuscript Letter Signed "Joseph" in French as King of Naples, one page, 7.5" x 10.25". [Kingdom of Naples], April 26, 1806. Not translated. To an unnamed General concerning the armaments at the port and fort of Brindisi hoping he will give all the necessary orders that all the pieces that are in the other Adriatic ports should be used at Brindisi. After Emperor Napoleon I was victorious at the Battle of Austerlitz in December 1805, he dispatched an army to southern Italy. Ferdinand, King of Naples and the Two Sicilies, fled to Palermo and on February 14, 1806, the French entered Naples and Joseph was given military command. On March 30th, Napoleon proclaimed his brother Joseph-Napoleon Bonaparte as King. The letter is wrinkled and stained, torn at the lower corners, with show-through from mounting remnants on verso, but it is darkly penned on laid paper with a clear signature of Joseph. Accompanied by an engraved oval portrait of "Joseph Napoleon," lightly foxed, 4.75" x 7.25" overall, image 3.25" x 4".
