King Charles II of England Autograph Letter Signed to Prince Rupert of the Rhine, his cousin. One page, 8.5" x 11.5", February 22, 1655, in French, stressing the friendship between the two. Charles II (1630-1685) was the son of Charles I, who had been deposed and executed at the end of the English Civil War, leading to a twenty-one year period known as the Interregnum when England had no monarch. Though he had assumed the Scottish crown in 1649, he did not become King of England until the Restoration of 1660. Prince Rupert (1619-1682), a supporter of Charles, served as a German soldier, artist, governor, and scientist. He fought in the service of Charles. Shortly before this note was written, Rupert had returned from a voyage that left him in need of financial help, so he left England and returned to Germany to raise capital. This toned document is carefully inset into a larger archival sheet, which has a 1" tear at the upper edge, for an overall size of 8.5" x 6". Minor soiling.

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
