DescriptionJuan O'Donojú Manuscript Letter Signed as the Last Spanish Ruler of Mexico. Two pages, 8" x 12", San Joaquin, September 14, 1821. A letter to Ramon Gutierres and General Francisco Novella informing them to keep the peace and begin evacuation of the plazas they have occupied. O'Donojú assures them that the safety of their troops is guaranteed by the Treaty of Córdoba: "La garantia que V.S. solicita para los comprometidos en la defense de la plaza está asegurada en el tratado de Córdoba de que tiene V.S. copia..." Ragged margin at left, evidence of being disbound. Restoration at right margin where tears have been mended and paper added affecting several words but not the context.
As a reward for his valiant service in the war against France, O'Donojú was granted the title of jefe politico superior of New Spain; this gave him the authority of previous viceroys although not the official title. Mexico was rebelling against Spanish rule, and the previous viceroy (Juan Ruiz de Apodaca, Conde de Venadito) had been recalled back to Spain. O'Donojú arrived in Mexico in July of 1821 only to find that all of Mexico, except for Veracruz, Mexico City, and Acapulco, supported Agustin de Iturbide and his forces. After failed attempts to influence the populace back to Spanish rule, O'Donojú invited Iturbide to meet. The two leaders met at the city of Córdoba, and quickly reached an accord (Treaty of Córdoba) which was signed on August 24, 1823. On September 13, O'Donojú met with Iturbide and Francisco Novella to arrange for transfer of power; the following day drafting this letter that reiterated the agreements reached. O'Donojú died of pleurisy just three weeks after the date of this letter.
