    Juan Cortez Document Signed as captain of the royal presidio at Bahia del Espiritu Santo. One page in Spanish, 8.5" x 12.25", September 5, 1797, Bahia del Espiritu Santo [Goliad, Texas]. In this document, Cortez evaluates the priest and "ecclesiastic judge of this presidio", Jose Miguel Martinez: he "exercised his functions as he should . . . administering the Sacred Sacraments of confession and blessing the sick at all hours. . . . he takes a third of what is his from the port tax, giving the remainder to his parish, who says also that this priest is of irreproachable conduct." Goliad, Texas, began as one of the oldest Spanish towns in Texas, established in October 1749. Bold handwriting on toned paper with folds; fine.
