Juan Antonio Padilla Autograph Document Signed. One page, two sided, 8" x 13.25", Nacogdoches, April 10, 1832. Juan Antonio Padilla served as secretary of state of Coahuila and Texas from 1825 to 1828. The following year, he was appointed General Land Commissioner but his mission in Texas was short-lived, for after issuing only three land titles, on April 26, 1830, Padilla was arrested for murder and fraud and his citizenship was suspended; the charges were likely politically motivated. He was eventually found innocent and his arrest was lifted in 1832, at about which time he penned this document to "Sr. Capn D. Ventura Ramon, Monclova." It reads in part: "Please send payment to the order of C. Jesus de la Garza of Bavia Company the amount of fifty-nine pesos . . . value received by the same row that I leave credited to an account; that's it, a receipt, and knowledge that it will be well paid." Stitched to the letter is a small receipt showing Padilla's arithmetic. Document is lightly age toned with areas of fold separation that have been stitched together with thread. Good condition.
