The part you were willing to take during the last campaign was very favorable for me. And the wishes you made for my well-being are furthermore another reason of the gratitude of an old friend in whose feelings you may sure to find the utmost mutual sentiments and a sincere desire to see you happy." Prince Joseph Poniatowski (1763-1813) was the nephew of the last king of Poland who served as a field marshal for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1794 he took part in the ill-fated Kosciuszko Insurrection and was later a marshal for the French Empire during the Napoleonic Wars, dying on October 16, 1813, during the Battle of Leipzig.
