José María Córdova (1799-1829), the Hero of Ayacucho, had fought in the War of Independence from Spain since the tender age of 15 and by the age of 20 was serving on the staff of Simón Bolívar. Prior to his victory at Chorros Blancos (1820), he was appointed by Bolívar as military chief of Antioquia. He was a vocal opponent of Bolívar's proclamation naming himself dictator of Colombia and planned to overthrow him. In the battle against Bolívar, Córdova was killed by Irish commander Rupert Hand.
