Description

José María Córdova Document Signed "J. M. Cordova" as commanding general of the Colombian Army. One page, 5.25" x 7.75", March 11, 1820, to the minister of medicine two months after his victory at the Battle of Chorros Blancos, forever expelling all Spanish troops from his home state of Antioquia [Colombia]. He informs the minister that the sick of the battalion under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Ricaurte were cured using the funds for the month. Very slight toning at the upper left corner, this is a very fine piece. Córdova's signature and paraph are small, but elegant and bright.

José María Córdova (1799-1829), the Hero of Ayacucho, had fought in the War of Independence from Spain since the tender age of 15 and by the age of 20 was serving on the staff of Simón Bolívar. Prior to his victory at Chorros Blancos, he was appointed by Bolívar as military chief of Antioquia. He was a vocal opponent of Bolívar's proclamation naming himself dictator of Colombia and planned to overthrow him. In the battle against Bolívar, Córdova was killed by Irish commander Rupert Hand.
