Indira Gandhi Two Typed Letters Signed to Norman Cousins. Includes:

Typed Letter Signed, three pages, 8" x 11", New Delhi, June 21, 1977. Gandhi describes the dangerous political environment in India, and the personal attacks on her character. In part: "Perhaps it would have been better to suffer Mujib's fate, which I avoided in 1975, than be subjected to this kind of character assassination and be made to feel an outcast. All but a handful of old faithfuls are afraid to visit or help. None of us is being allowed to go out of the country...I am not a hysterical person or given to exaggeration or easily afraid...Unless there is some unexpected development this government is headed towards fascist functioning with all the outward trappings of democracy. Some things went wrong, but the Emergency gave India the opportunity to stand on her feet." Signed "with good wishes, Indira Gandhi." Accompanied by original transmittal envelope. She has handwritten the letter's salutation and closing, and at the top noted the letter as "Personal".

Typed Letter Signed, one page, 8" x 11.5", New Delhi, August 24, 1980, typed on official Prime Minister letterhead. Gandhi thanks Cousins for his letter of condolence following the death of her son, Sanjay. Includes original transmittal envelope.

Indira Gandhi was the first, and only female Prime Minister of India, and it was believed that her son would succeed her. As a political figure, three attempts had been made on Sanjay's life, but he was ultimately killed in a plane crash. Indira Gandhi served as Prime Minister until she was assassinated in 1984. Ex. Norman Cousins Estate.

Condition: Lightly toned, with usual mail folds. Two small soiling areas on front of June 21 letter, else good condition.
