Great Seal of Scotland, Queen Victoria, 1837-1901, red wax, 6.25" in diameter housed in a japanned tin skippet. The obverse is the same as Queen Victoria's third Great Seal of England except for the thistle in the exergue. The obverse bears the legend, "VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIARUM REGINA FIDEI DEFENSOR." The reverse shows the Royal Arms of Scotland, similar to the Seal of England with some modifications, such as the Scottish Lion in the first quarter, instead of the three English leopards, and the badge of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle above the Lesser George badge of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. The remnants of the cord remain. The scarlet wax indicates that seal was used for an appointment of a bishop or a document related to the affairs of state. The seal shows considerable wear and has two splits.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
