Francisco de Paula Santander Autograph Endorsement Signed. One page, 7.75" x 10", on Republic of Gran Colombia letterhead, in Spanish, Bogota, October 18, 1827. Written below an order to the Treasury Department to pay Antonio Caro the amount of 4,000 pesos. Santander (1792-1840), vice president of the Republic of Gran Colombia, acknowledges receipt of the warrant and orders the payment to be carried out.

Once close friends with Simon Bolivar, under whom he served as vice president, a rift (both political and personal) developed in 1826 when a rebellion erupted in Venezuela. Santander believed the rebels should be dealt with harshly, but Bolivar disagreed and organized a general amnesty. Santander believed Bolivar was close to implementing a lifelong term for the president (flirting too closely with monarchy) and was undermining the constitutional authority of the government. In August, 1828, Bolivar declared himself dictator and abolished the office of vice president.

In September, Bolivar escaped an attempt on his life and Santander was implicated and arrested. Despite a complete lack of evidence, Santander was tried and found guilty. He was sentenced to die, but Bolivar pardoned him, forcing him into exile. Later, Santander would admit that he knew of the plot and said nothing, but denied planning it.

Bolivar died in 1830 and the Republic of Gran Colombia fell apart. Santander returned from exile in 1832 and served as president of the Republic of New Granada.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
