Description

Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain Royal Appointment Signed by both Monarchs. One page, 8.5" x 9.25" (sight), in Spanish, n. d., appointing Pedro Gomes de Selubal as judge. The order reads, in part:

"Master Pedro Gomes de Selubal. You already know how we ordered you to go as our...judge to our court of law and Chancillery of the city of Ciudad Real. And now...because of several reasons pertaining to our best interest, we have agreed that you should...serve us in our court at Valladolid, just as you were going to do so in our court at Ciudad Real...under the title of Our Judge in the aforementioned court of law...we therefore send you this, our Royal Order. We order and command that you leave post haste everything else and that you go...and live at Our previously mentioned court in Valladolid."

Ferdinand and Isabella, known as the Catholic kings, ruled Castile and Aragon jointly. Their marriage in 1469 unified Christian Spain which laid the foundation for Spain's future greatness. They had five children, including Catherine of Aragon, the first wife of Henry VIII of England, and Joanna the Mad, who was the mother of Charles V, king of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor. Isabella and her husband are famous for introducing the Inquisition in 1478, the reconquest of Granada and for their expulsion of the Jews in 1492. That same year they sponsored Christopher Columbus's voyage, which led to the creation of the overseas Spanish colonial empire, bringing great wealth and power to Spain.

Light, marginal toning. Separation at one fold intersection with slight paper loss, not affecting the text. Chipping at left edge with small binding holes. Text is very bright. Else fine. Matted and framed with a portrait of each monarch, an engraved biography of each, and an engraved translation of the letter to an overall size of 44.25" x 34".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
