Erwin Rommel Typed Letter Signed "Rommel" with original transmittal envelope and signed drawing. One page, 7.75" x 11.25" (sight), in German, "Headquarters," June 4, 1943. Writing to "Generalmajor Jacobi," he says, in full: "Many thanks for your letter of May 28. I would like to extend heartfelt wishes that you will soon receive good news of your son obtaining the position. I am feeling so healthy that I could take over a new assignment. Thus does one become the best, by conquering difficulty and putting it behind him." With the original transmittal envelope and a drawing of the field marshal which he has signed, in pencil. Matted and framed to an overall size of 19.5" x 18".

    More Information:

Erwin Rommel (1891-1944), forced out of Tunisia after his defeat at the Second Battle of El Alamein (1942) and the landing of Allied troops in Morocco and Algeria, found himself back in Germany, ill and, for all intents and purposes, jobless. Having recovered his health (as stated in his letter), he was first ordered to Greece, then to Italy, and finally to France. By early 1944, Rommel was implicated in a plot to kill Hitler and was given the option for public trial or suicide. His betrayal would be kept secret, as Hitler knew that German morale would suffer, and the public would be told that he died a hero. He chose to commit suicide and died by cyanide pill on October 14, 1944, and was given a large state funeral.
