Empress Victoria of Germany and Princess Victoria of Prussia Autograph Letter Jointly Signed, a two-part letter written and signed by both the daughter and granddaughter of Queen Victoria of Great Britain expressing royal grief at the death of Prince Leopold. Four integral pages, 4.5" x 7", bordered in black for morning and topped by the princess' crowned cypher, April 8, 1884, Berlin. Fine.

    More Information:

The first part of the letter is written by the eighteen-year-old Princess Victoria thanking Jilla (?) for her letter of condolence at the death of her uncle, Prince Leopold (April 7, 1853 - March 28, 1884), the Duke of Albany and the youngest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Leopold was diagnosed with hemophilia as a baby, which later led to his death as an adult. Princess Victoria signs her portion of the letter in the middle of page four as "Victoria (Junior)".

Princess Victoria's mother, Empress Victoria, picks up the letter below her daughter's signature writing, "Let me add two words darling Jilla to my child's letter." The German empress continues for another three pages telling of her grief at losing her brother, "it's too terrible to think of!"

Empress Victoria (1840-1901) was the firstborn child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She became the empress of Germany after her marriage to German Emperor Frederick III in 1858. Their second daughter was Princess Victoria of Prussia (1866-1929), known to the public as Princess Victoria and to the family as Moretta or Young Vicky.
