Emilio Bacardi Legal Filing Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 8.5" x 12.5". Cuba, August 25, 1871. A legal filing in Spanish (untranslated) announcing Bacardi's intention to purchase land in El Cobre, township of Sevilla, belonging to Dona Francisca Garcia, a widow. The filing goes on to designate the land and announces Bacardi's intention to mine it. Signed "Emilio Bacardi" on page two. On sealed paper. Beneath Bacardi's signature is a docket acknowledging that the filing has been recorded. A longer docket on the third page records that the matter remains unresolved the following year.

Together with a telegram dated August 28, 1922 sent by order of the governor of Santiago de Cuba announcing the death of Emilio Bacardi. The oldest son of Facundo Bacardi, Emilio took over as president of the distillery upon his father's declining health. Unlike his father who was a devout loyalist to Spain, Emilio was active in nationalistic politics and was in favor of Cuban independence. He spent four years in prison for his political activities. Cuba achieved independence from Spain in 1898.

Condition: Legal filing is gently toned, with bold ink. Small pin holes and thread at right margin indicate that the document was previously bound. The telegram has chipping at all edges, not affecting the text.
