DescriptionDavid Ben-Gurion Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5.75" x 7.75", in Hebrew, January 25, 1955. Addressed to Moshe Sharett, the prime minister of Israel, Ben-Gurion discusses his concerns regarding Israel's mode of elections, in full and in translation: "The nations that follow the idea of local elections - England, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand - are strong democratic places who guard the freedom of the individual. We inherited the mode of elections from the international committee which in its time was perhaps necessary. This way of doing things is likely to divide the nation. The platform of election divides the nation and destroys the stance of protection from national crises and will create a schism between those that are elected by the people and the voters."
One month after writing this letter, Ben-Gurion, who had earlier served as Israel's first prime minister, returned to government and re-assumed the position of minister of defense (a post in which he had earlier served from 1948 until 1954). In November 1955, he was again elected prime minister and remained in that post until 1963.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
