DescriptionCharles Darwin Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages, 4.5" x 7.25", Kent [England], September 1, n. y. [circa 1840], to botanist John Forbes Royle. Darwin had an interest in the biodiversity of India and was in contact with British scientists who had spent time there, scientists like Royle. Here, Darwin writes a quick letter to Royle, thanking him for the use of his books, in full:
"I return you with very many thanks your valuable work. I am sure I have not lost any slip or disarranged the loose numbers. I have been interested by looking through the vols, though I have not found quite so much as I had thought possible about the varieties of the Indian domestic animals and plants, and the attempts at introduction have been too recent for the effects (if any) of climate to have been developed. I have, however, been astonished and delighted at the evidence of the energetic attempts to do good by such numbers of people, and most of them evidently not personally interested in the result. Long may our rule flourish in India. I declare all the labour shown in these transactions is enough by itself to make one proud of one's countrymen. Once again let me thank you for lending me so valuable a work, & one so evidently useful & well used by you."
Royle (1799-1858) was the first superintendent of the Saharanpur Botanic Gardens in Northern India and an expert in the medical properties of Indian plants. Folds. Darwin's signature is very bold.
