Charles Cornwallis Autograph Letter Signed "Cornwallis" as governor-general of India. Two pages, 7.75" x 9.25" (sight), Calcutta, March 8, 1789, regarding the reappointment of Jacob Rider to a position within the East India Company. Lord Cornwallis writes, in part: "This letter will be delivered to you by Mrs. Rider, the wife of Mr. Jacob Rider who was a member of the Board of Trade, & was dismissed the service in 1787. Mr. Rider always bore a very respectable character, and was so fair and open in his answers that the suit against him here is withdrawn." Rider was reappointed, but in the late-1780s would be found guilty, along with other members of the board, of taking five percent of the money acquired in company contracts. Following Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown, he was sent to India where he instituted judicial and administrative reforms as well as leading military campaigns against uprisings by natives. Matted and framed with an engraved portrait of the marquess to an overall size of 35.25" x 26".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
