Charles Best (1899-1978) was a Canadian physiologist. While still an undergraduate at the University of Toronto in 1921 he took a job as a laboratory assistant under Dr. Frederick Banting. A few months later, after being loaned a lab by physiologist Dr. Macleod, they successfully obtained insulin from the pancreas of a dog that could be used to control diabetes. The men brought in biochemist James Collip to help them purify the insulin to better suit use in humans. They succeeded the next year and, in 1923, Macleod and Banting won the Nobel Prize for the discovery. Best was not considered because he had not yet finished his medical training, but, despite this, Banting recognized him in his speech and split his prize winnings with Best. Best went on to be among the first to use anticoagulants to treat thrombosis and he discovered the enzyme histaminase and the vitamin choline.

This lot also includes his twenty-two page curriculum vitae typescript. 8.5" x 11".
