    Description

Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna Military Appointment Signed as interim president of Mexico. One partially printed page, 8.25" x 12", in Spanish, Mexico City, January 5, 1842. Santa Anna, holding the Mexican presidency for a sixth non-consecutive time, is conferring on Luis Espinosa the rank of captain in the "...second company of the active battalion of Morelia." Countersigned by José Maria Tornel and thirteen others. Chipped along the right and left edge and lightly toned.

Later that year, Santa Anna ordered an invasion of the Republic of Texas which ended in the defeat of the Mexican army at the Battle of Salado Creek, seven miles outside of San Antonio. The battle marked the final invasion of the Texas Republic by Mexico and helped to convince more Texans of the benefits of annexation by the United States.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
