Anne de Montmorency, High Constable of France, Document Signed "Montmorency." Four integral pages, 8" x 11.5", "Savigny-le-Temple, prés Melun," July 4 [1539], in French (not translated). The document, addressed to the President of the Parliament of Savoy at Chambéry, tells of the diplomatic grievances that will be presented to Pope Paul III. The messenger will be Monsieur de Grignan, King Francis I's ambassador to the papal court. Among the issues discussed are the matter of posting papal bulletins in Savoy and the delivery of a papal bull concerning the Priory of Bourgot. Soon after this document was written Montmorency's fortunes at the court of Francis I declined and he fell into royal disfavor. He returned to court with varying degrees of success under successive monarchs. He was killed at the age of seventy-four while leading his troops in the Battle of Saint-Denis in the French Wars of Religion. The document has folds, soiling, and repair of paper loss at the folds with a stamp from a previous collection. There are remnants of a red wax seal on the verso.
