    Description

Ambassador Joseph Grew Typed Letter Signed. Two pages, 7" x 9", Tokyo, June 20, 1938. Typed on American Embassy Tokyo letterhead, Grew responds to an American constituent named "Mr. Blomgren". He writes: "in the parlous state of world affairs, I think that we all need a lot of straight thinking, objectivity, avoidance of bias and prejudice, ability to distinguish propaganda from the truth and, above all, a genuine effort to see the other fellow's point of view before formulating our own judgments." In 1938, the year this letter was written, the relationship between the United States and Japan was greatly strained and would continue to deteriorate, ultimately setting the stage for Pearl Harbor. Flattened folds with toned edges.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
