Description

Agustin Iturbide Letter Signed as President of the Regency. Six pages, 8.25" x 11.5", Mexico, January 9, 1822. Great content letter addressed to the bishop of the cathedral of "N. Reyno de Leon." Iturbide had masterfully created an alliance amongst Mexican liberal insurgents, landed nobility, and the church. Their goal was to establish an independent Mexico, which would be ruled by a monarch. In this letter, Iturbide informs the bishop that the preceding government had left the country in chaos. Iturbide states that the first order of business for the ruling junta was to ensure that the future congress would be able to set up a general system of economic policy. Over the next six pages, he carefully outlines his ideas about policy regarding economics, the church, and the court system. He deftly declares that the church has the most wealth, and can continue to collect their rents; however he is careful to explain that he does not expect the church to make any sacrifices.

At the time this letter is written, the newly formed Republic was unstable with multiple factions vying for control. Iturbide would crown himself emperor of Mexico a few months later, but would reign for less than a year. In near fine condition, with only gentle toning.
