[Texas Revolution] Joaquin Maria de Castillo y Lanzas Autograph Letter Signed "J. M. de Castillo y Lanzas". One page, 8" x 10", September 16, 1835, New York, to an unknown recipient. Lanzas, a Mexican diplomatist, writes that he is "enclosing the letter of introduction for Genl. Cos" and that "It now appears that Gl. Santa Anna does not intend going to Texas." Martin Perfecto de Cos, brother-in-law and government appointee of Santa Anna, was sent to Texas in September of 1835 to find out why Texians at Anahuac refused to pay the duties imposed by Mexican President Santa Anna. Cos' tyrannical attempts to end Texian resistance were one of the irritants that spurred the Texians on to revolution. In November 1835, Santa Anna left Mexico City with a large army to put down the Texas rebellion. With minor separations at fold intersections; fine.
