Description

[Mexican War]. Benito G. Lamadrid Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages with integral address leaf, 8.25" x 10.5", in Spanish, Mexico, December 30, 1845. Benito Lamadrid, a partner in the company Tiburcio Gomez Lamadrid, writes to a contact in London to discuss matters of business. Written the day after the annexation of the Republic of Texas by the United States, war with America seemed impossible to avoid. General Mariano Paredes, tasked with protecting the country from an invasion by the U.S., instead marched on Mexico City to seize control of the government. Here Lamadrid writes of the revolt, in part:

"15 days ago in San Luis [Potosí] General Paredes revolted with from 6 to 7000 men whom he had grouped there for the Texas campaign. By the newspapers you will see the plan he has proclaimed, and which is not flattering. As Paredes is going against the government and marching on the capital, it has been placed in a state of defense and therefore it has been armed and continues with the arming of thousands of civilians...Some feel there may not be a shot fired...I will tell you about this new revolution in my next letter..."

The same day this letter was written, General Gabriel Valencia, entrusted with the protection of the capital, seized the government and declared his loyalty to Paredes, who arrived in Mexico City on January 2, 1846. He was declared president the following day.

    Smoothed folds and lightly toned.
